I have 7 siblings

1 paranoid schizophrenia
2 aspergers syndrome
1 OCD
1 depression and anxiety

Father Aspergers, mother depression and anxiety

I think that most illnesses and especially mental illness is hereditary. How can it not be. It is a very lucky person what is born without this predispositiin to certain conditions.

Its important to recognize it, but also important not to blame your parents especially when they are unsupportive to a condition passed down from them.

When God dished out the brains, we got a bad deal

My mom, son and I have bipolar.
Thats rotten luck but at least you all know you have bipolar and can help each other out

My horrid 'roommate' is bipolar (diagnosed but in denial) and autistic (I see all the signs).

Folk like him who refuse to do anything about it can be hell to live with

My mother was schizophrenic. Not sure if father had anything or was just a weirdo. He was alcoholic. Not sure what my brothers have been through either though there's been some mental illness. I believe some have hid it, and used alcohol to cope too. I doubt any have experienced as much MI as me, but who knows? It's not something we've talked about much.

I have bipolar disorder and ADHD diagnosed with some anxiety issues.

My father had PTSD (or combat neurosis as it was called back then). He was treated with an antidepressant for 18 months then came off it. He also probably has undiagnosed moderate OCD.
My mother is fairly sane and healthy, but struggles with periodic depression, possibly Dysthymia.

I also had a great aunt with Schizophrenia.

Several members of my family also have BP, also a major depressive disorder, one ADHD and a borderline personality disorder which has been the most difficult to deal with. My sister only enters into harmful relationships so I'm sure there are underlying issues there too.

My wife is bipolar I. Only my wife is diagnosed but we suspect her sister is also bipolar I or at least unipolar manic and that her father suffers from depression and her mother from anxiety.

My mother is bipolar and my sis is currently under antidepressants...
Psychiatrists told me that I have a predisposition to mental health illness due to my mother.
...Oh well...🦄

My son and I were part of a research project back in 2006. It was run by the University of Washington, St Louis. They took blood samples as they were studying the genetic component in relation to Bipolar. There were also a series of interviews. In one of the interviews I was asked, if I had known when I was pregnant with my son that he would have bipolar disorder would I have considered an abortion. I almost fell on the floor.
My son continued with interviews for a couple of years.
I believe there is a genetic component and as I have heard it is more than one gene. Predisposition does't necessarily mean you will have it. In my case, a trauma that lasted 3 years when I was a child sealed the deal.
