:confused: Hi been home fro hospital since Thursday knew it was not going to be easy, I have never felt the way I am just all over the place in floods of tears trying to slot back into life doing the usual things like washing, cooking spoken to my care coordinator said to use crisis team as well which I have done just don't think they are listening giving me advice about senses ice on the back of the neck, putting face in ice water, going outside breathing in the air buying smelling salts. I have never felt this way before has anyone got any that they do??.

I'm really sorry to hear what you've been going through. I suffer from bad anxiety as well and am on dizaepam 5mg as required which helps as it does make you relax a bit, maybe you could speak to your gp about some medication to help with you're anxiety? Going into and coming out of hospital is very stressful, I've found with my own BDP and other people with the same that we get used to the hospital environment and the safe feeling we get while being looked after very quickly, which is why a short hospital stay is only recommended to people with BDP in a crisis situation as we can become dependent a little on being in a 'safe' environment.
I was in hospital myself about 2months ago and have been in and out for years. The best advice I can give you and what I did myself, was to take things slowly. Allow yourself time to adjust to being home, try sticking to the routine you got used to while in hospital for a few days, getting up, washed, dressed having your meals at the same time etc. this routine and sticking to it creates a bit of structure to your day which you can focus on. If you are on medication take it at the same times everyday and try to get to bed around the same time.
Aromatherapy oils or reed diffusers or incense like lavender especially is very good to help you relax. One of the best things I learned in hospital for coping with anxiety was to focus on my breathing.
When you start feeling anxious or stressed sit down. Breathe in deeply through your nose until you feel a big bubble of air nearly to your tummy in for 7 out for 11 repeat until your mind and body start to relax, you can do this anywhere in bed before you go to sleep, in the bath or just sitting on your sofa. This technique in my opinion even tho I am on dizaepam was BETTER than taking the tablets. Focusing only on breathing in and out and not thinking about anything else is the basis of meditation and mindfulness.
When you are doing housework like cleaning or cooking try to focus only on what you are doing. For example I'm doing the dishes, I focus on the feeling of the warm water, while looking out of the kitchen window at nature outside. I am living in the moment I am not thinking or worrying about the past or future I am completely focusing on now.
This will take a bit of time and practice and to be honest until I tried the techniques I thought it was a load of new age crap, but they do work and if you find your mind wandering (which it will constantly believe me) focus again on your breathing make it deep in and out. Most of us breathe very shallowly and fast into our chests, breathing deeply is very relaxing.

Listening to music you really enjoy, getting engrossed in a good book and watching a good film or series are all great for taking you out of yourself so you aren't worrying and stressing so much as you are concentrating on something else not your thoughts.

I'll agree and second that motion; I always do listen to music, anything with genre of musical, easy listening middle of the road music, and jazz sound likes of now, can I name drop? Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, collabration cd, and also Natalie Cole, and Diana Krall, easy listening wise, Bette Midler, and overall Jane Mcdonald, a particular rise to fame star on a certain cruise, a cruise at the time she was working on, and made fame and branched out to wider, and larger audiences, me included, and if I could also name drop, John Barrowman, and Michael Buble. These are my strong music intrests of genre and styles of music I pretty much like to listen to.


I also workout to fitness, traditional aerobics, dvds, and also group salsa dvd, and a fun carribbean dance workout, which in fact, is very easy to follow and do at the same time - note I always pre watch to master, and then I master eventually a dvd workout myself, and I also attend classes of dance, zumba gold, and hopefully at some point adult street dance.


In my spare time, I'll either knit, or do my cross stitiching design work, and listening to my walkman with headphones combined.


Oh yes, I am on call for registered volunteering work; and soon, hopefully in the meantime I am shortlisted for an interview, and a big meeting for another placement of volunteering, I'll hopefully will be busish as a bee.


Once again, and I agree with another reader of the forum, I am feeling very sorry for how you are at the moment, I hope you recover, and I wish you well, best wishes,

I can relate to something on this post, Madman, I also back in 2004,found that it was very hard indeed for me to accept, that I had mental health issues develope from out of nowhere so to speak, and as I was always, always a paid working character in office administration, and data entry based work, this really had knocked me back for six.


Anyway, after and here I go again, back in 2007, when placed onto much better medication, without not so much of an issue to cause weight gain, I ventured back, into fitness daily weekly workouts, and attending classes, zumba later on in years, and now zumba gold, I thought right, I'll do that, and it soon in no time, gave me the confidence, within me to feel much better to be able to cope with managing mental health issues, although I am on medication, and at the correct certain level of dosage, personally this has helped me into volunteering for charities in administration, general, non phone work for another condition I have, and data entry or maybe to give computer instruction to people on a one to one basis, in my main community centre base.


I realise hapipily the hard, way, that, had the firm not been made to close down, and reduncies on the rise, due to my own problems, which my management of all time caught slightly at work, developing and much worse, I could have easly by accident anyway fallen into the world of volunteering. I'm just very much grateful in that, I wasn't working in those years then, other wise parents and i would have had pretty much a big headache about us - salary earnings, not beign earned, so I'm very relieved and much appreciative, that wasn't the case, a big phew relief.


I wasn't well durign the days and evening yesterday, so I couldn't post this aspect, I just wanted to offer to share, I too, found it most difficult at first, and then strangely, by fluke, like the idea of volunteering, and so to speak a freelance volunteer, and also getting my in home workouts done, and hopefully from now onwards, attending zumba gold classes.


I agree, and do really sympathise, for you, however, it does allow very much for time to heal, forget, and then try to move on, are you if you don't mind me asking, under the mental health department in your borough, they ought to have a CPN, or an Occupational Therapist, and an Ot certainly should and a qualified one if at all, point you in the right direction to help you within your home, for yourself this is, or out into the community. This is only an idea.
