My husband has had anxiety attacks whilst driving. He feels a clenching feeling in the base of his skull and persistently touches his face and seat belt when it's happening.

It first started when he was driving with a slight hangover and now happens when he is driving at any time, particularly if it's a long journey and on a motorway.

He saw a doctor a few moths ago who wasn't much help (gave him an anxiety-related pamphlet). He tried once to call a help line on this pamphlet but didn't get through and has not tried since. He still be lives that there is a physical problem.

He suffers from low self-esteem and when things go wrong at work this gets worse.

Please help me. Every time I try get him to get help I'm just being a 'nagging wife'. This is putting a lot of strain on our marriage.

Hayley,Maybe google driving anxiety and see what comes up.You may be able to read the symptoms and see if this clenching feeling in the base of his skull is common in people with driving anxiety. If not the GP should shed light on what is causing that. There are specialist instructors can help those who get anxiety driving it is a case of making enquires to get the correct specialist help.maybe your husband needs to search this out for himself so that you are not getting the blame for nagging. It also sounds like the first time it happened when he was driving with a hangover he may have had a traumatic or scary experience on the road and since then it makes him anxious to drive like he is scared it will happen again! He may just need to talk through his anxieties with someone who can help and reassure him?
