Agoraphobia?

Hello, I was diagnosed with agoraphobia a few years ago. I've gotten alot better, but I tend to fall back into "my comfort zone". I don't have all the typical symptoms of agoraphobia. I don't panic when I have to leave but I do get severe agitation and make life miserable for me and everyone else. Does this make my agoraphobia less severe than someone that faints if they even look outside. I love staying home and have spent months not leaving my house, I call this my comfort zone. I've been told that I'm just lazy and use agoraphobia as an excuse. Can anyone else relate?

:welcome: to the forum. I'm afraid I don't have agoraphobia but know that it must be really terrible for some people. Have you ever had any therapy for it? I would suggest that would be a help. Most GPs can give you something to take just before you go out to lessen the symptoms I think.

Thank you. I appreciate the welcome. I have been treated with medication, that I'm sure has helped. I was just mostly wondering if anyone else has severe agitation when they have to leave the house and how they cope.

I'm no expert, but I would say your Agoraphobia sounds mild, so I'm happy for you. :) I was never an Agoraphobic until this summer. I became paranoid I would faint in front of people and cause a scene, so I went through this phase for months where I would start feeling heavy-headed and break into cold sweats whenever I'd go out (panic attack). It was around a month ago that I decided enough was enough, so what I did to cut down on my anxiety:
1) I decided to spend all that extra adrenaline on exercise. I started working out--working out lowers your heart rate naturally, thus, lowering your anxiety.
2) I replaced caffeine. Tea is a huge staple in my country and we drink it a lot. I cut down from 2-3 mugs to just one in the afternoon, and replaced the rest of the times with hot milk. You won't believe what wonders hot milk does in keeping your nerves calm.
3) To beat my sugar cravings, I eat bananas. Bananas are also natural relaxants and they help combat anxiety likewise.
4) I turned towards meditation and breathing techniques. I learned those back when I was first diagnosed with anxiety and never actually put them to good use until my relapse this year. Once you learn how to control your breathing and heart rate, it's fine.
5) I also try not to think about fainting when I go out. I spent an evening looking up reasons one can faint and how you can't faint without any. I figured it's impossible for me to pass out because I'm generally healthy.

It's not even been a month but now I can stay out for quite a while before feeling woozy. I couldn't even think about stepping out of the house before. Hope it works out for you.

I was diagnosed with Agoraphobia in February. Having that diagnosis was a revelation for me . For many years I had been thought to have many other things to account for the behaviours.
My diagnosis read a second opinion from a specialist and my local CMHT are not happy with it.
Once I had educated myself and understood how it affected me it sort of "freed " me to do more and to cope better in difficult situations .
My conditions fluctuate greatly and I still have a tendency to avoid . I have also always been very open with others about my mental health , now though I can explain my conditions better to others and in turn their understanding of the situation makes easier for them cope and help.
For instance the staff at the local shop are very helpful . If I'm desperate for bread and milk I can stand outside ( often in tears ) and they either support me into The shop , or bring things out to me .
I think the irritability is at its worst for me in a busy shop and in particular in a queue .
It's amazing how many staff at the CMHT tell me I don't have Agoraphobia because I leave my home .

Hey - I’m new here and also have had agoraphobia for the last couple of years and can totally relate!

My agoraphobia is because I’m scared of having panic attacks in public and also because I’m scared of leaving home and being unable to get back. At the moment mine is the worst it’s ever been with me not leaving the house at all for most of the year, but even at the start when mine wasn’t as severe as now and I could still go short distances from home it still felt awful at the time, and completely disrupted my life and made it miserable so I completely get it. Your agoraphobia may be more mild than some people but everything is relative and what you’re going through is still awful to experience even if it’s not the same experience that others have.

I love staying at home too and even though everyone around me is super supportive, I get really bad anxiety and paranoia about being a burden and people just thinking that I’m lazy and that there’s nothing actually wrong with me even though there clearly is! All I can say is that you should probably take out time to explain to the ones that call you lazy how daily life really is for you and how it feels once you leave your comfort zone and hopefully they will be understanding and supportive.

On the bright side at least you have gotten better since your diagnosis and there’s probably more you can do to keep improving. If the agitation is your biggest problem then perhaps see your GP and see if they can prescribe something for you? At one point I was taking Propanolol which helps to stop the physical anxiety symptoms rather than the mental which might help with your agitation or maybe some type of talking therapies they can refer to to. I know that actually getting to the GP isn’t the most ideal situation for a agoraphobic person but in the long run you might get a whole lot better from it.

(I’m also in agreeable with whitelection, caffeine is terrible for my anxiety and I’ve also cut it out as much as poss)
