Hi. I'm looking for any thoughts on this issue I'm having. I've suffered from anxiety now for 10+ years. I am 25 and my life has been completely hijacked by panic. I am house bound for the past year because when I go outside it feels as though my throat is closing up. This escalates when I am for example walking along side an open road or somewhere escape isn't readily available. It feels like my swallowing mechanism goes haywire and I cant swallow saliva to moisten my rapidly drying throat. It's a horrible feeling. It makes me feel like my throat will just clamp shut and this sends me into a desperate state of panic.

This intense phobia also has taken over my dietary needs for the past 6/7 years. When I sit down to eat a meal, all I can focus on is the mechanics of swallowing and how easy it would be to choke on the food. I'm living in a nightmare with this fear and I really hope one of you guys could shed some light on this.

Thank you

Hello. I have never suffered from this personally. It feels like it is something that could really be helped by Good CBT. There is a lot of half baked CBT therapists out there and you would need a good one to offer techniques to help with this.

Can you think when it started and what might have triggered it? There is usually something which starts things off.

My pills made swallowing hard. Sometimes you should ask your doc if you need vitamins to go with pills

Your reptile brain controls swallowing. Pills may damage that. I was on abilify and I could barely walk and had a liquid diet

I want you to educate yourself on panic and the symptoms of panic, because its what helped me the most with this exact problem, i mean EXACT. What you just described is exactly word for word what i go through. Im literally the same age, 25, and have been suffering from panic/agoraphobia and the symtom and deacription you gave of this symtom is very normal of a symptom of panic and what most of us feel exactly and understand that it is NOT actually happenning. What you feel is in no way physical it as much as you feel it and think it is. Its something your mind is creating by manifesting it, and you need to understand it and practice mindfulness. I really stress this because ive lived this torture and i want you to overcome it. Trust me from focusing on the mechanics of eating and swallowing to the fear of my throat closing. Its all there. And all created my an unhealthy thought process. Im learning a lot in an audio book im listening to and its helped educate me on a lot of the precise symtoms of agoraphobia. Youre not alone and you can over come and fix this!
