Hi guys and girls. I really could do with some advice. I’ve recently tried to complete a Timeline of my life, starting from my earliest memories. However, I don’t have any memory of anything before age 12. Furthermore, I can’t really match any event in my life to a specific time or age. Even getting married, I can guess it was around 6 or 7 years ago and I think I know the date, but then I have guilt I haven’t remembered any of our anniversaries, but then I think I can’t actually remember whether I have or haven’t. Maybe cannabis has contributed to this? It can’t have caused it as my detachment and lack of memories started many years before I smoked?
Has anybody experienced the same or is my mind uniquely f*cked?

I would equally struggle. I can remember events vividly - but not the date or year they took place. I remember the order of events but not necessarily how old I was when events happened.

Never taken drugs, so I guess dates don't figure much in my thinking.

You may find the absence of memories before you were twelve is because your brain has blocked them through trauma....you might need professional help to unlock those.

Most mental illness, depression, medication illegal or legal, are linked to memory problems. Stress too can affect memory, and sleep loss. It does return i believe, and i found medication helped me. There is some atrophy linked to being repeatedly depressed and apparently medication can help repair this, but that may not be true. My memory is returning. Autobiographical memory was my biggest problem and doctor said that was linked to extreme stress and dissociation.

Photographs help as do other people's memories which will then trigger your own. Talking about the past helps.

If it’s tied to trauma that stuff is locked down. I get glimpses by remembering family cars, but that’s it.

Cannabis will create memory decay with prolonged use. But some stuff is just too painful to dig up and our brains will fight us with memory loss.

I seem to be the opposite, I remember traumatic experiences clearly, but everything else is blocked

I recently posted a thread on this as I cannot remember one birthday or Christmas and there are no photos that I can find. Yet I can remember family holidays from being quite young.
