If you genuinely have those: PMDD kind of problems/ intense mood cycles attached to your period cycles, they are like a living hell.
I recommend go to a doctor (ideally a specialist not general doctor) to see about getting on the right mini pill.

My solution was to see a specialist endocrinologist and gynaecologist who recommended I just don't have a period, by taking the mini-pill every day back to back. Well I haven't had a period in 6 months.
I still have my mental health problems, but at least I don't have to go through the hell of a period/period-induced moods alongside it.

People will recommend stuff like exercise and healthy eating but the fact is your sugar and fat cravings (oh yes those chocolate cravings) are driven by the hormone fluctuations of the period cycle itself, and they're not going to be as easy as "oh just eat healthily" to fight off, because it's literally your hormone telling you to do it. Additionally, if you feel like utter shite/weak/fatigue due to menstrual cycle, you are not going to want to be exercising either. So even though the behaviours of exercise/ healthy eating would theoretically help mitigate the moods, in practice, I have never found these to be a realistic solution.

The only thing that has helped is just blocking my period. Some people think the pill is "unnatural" and all women need to have a period, personally I view it as a medical solution for a very debilitating problem that fucked up my life. My menstrual cycles literally meant I lost 2 weeks a month every every month, to that living hell. If I could get rid of that by not having a period, I'm not going to contest it it is 'unnatural' to take the pill, when overall honestly I feel healthier for not having one.

The cravings can be hard, especially chocolate as you said. I agree with you that the weakness and fatigue can't easily be fought off with exercise and healthy eating. Thank you for the info about the mini pill.

Hi Bluewater,

I would highly recomend a very good energising drink, with a ml amounts of b vitamins. The sort I take, from a well known pharmacy and shop chain, has 10ml of B6, and the same amount for B12. I swear happily to this energise drink, and also contains other b vitamins,, it's combined with vitmain c, and also minerals, such as calcium, magneisum. I can't remember offhand, if there's potassium, that I'm unsure.

Best regards.

I'm 50 and I don't get a regular period anymore but I have been taking a high strength vitamin B formula for years.

I use hormone patches now and they have helped tremendously with peri-menopausal symptoms and stabilising my moods.

Hi there, when I was mensing I had severe pmdd. I was already on antidepressants which is supposed to help relieve symptoms. My doctor also recommended no caffeine, plenty of sunlight, exercise and drinking milk. I did this and my symptoms we’re relieved enormously. The milk I found was the easiest to do as my symptoms of anxiety and depression were relieved almost as soon as I finished drinking the glass. This might not be the effect it has on everyone but it’s the effect that it has had on me. I’d recommend at least giving it a shot to see how it might work for you. Also a healthy diet, good self care and a good nights sleep works wonders also. Hope this is helpful for you. xo, j

Also, my naturopath recommendeds eating something high in protein to stop cravings for carbohydrates. This works for me.

Luckily I no longer have to deal with this. I haven’t had a period for 11 years now but when I did have them I HATED them. A few days before my cycle I’d get so outrageously moody that I could mess up jobs, relationships and any plans etc…
My home would look a mess , my appetite off the charts. Add a full moon in there and I was fairly loco at times.

I’m of the belief that eating properly and exercising help significantly . Not while you are on your period but in between. While going the peri menopause I added evening primrose, black cohosh and sometimes red raspberries. These substances help in the lack of estrogen transition. I’m very against conventional hormonal replacement. It’s proven as cancer causing.

Unfortunately I still had to work / go to school etc… so I couldn’t stay at home and pamper myself but if I could have, I would have. Epsom salt baths helped. Eating low salt, low sugar helps a lot in the excessive bloating however it was almost guaranteed I’d pig out right before I got it and never apologized for it.
