5 Reasons Why You Should Stop Watching TV | The Unbounded Spirit

BY SOFO ARCHON

When I was a child, I used to spend much of my time every day watching television. I would watch almost anything TV was presenting me with, as long as it was entertaining: reality shows, newscasts, movies, and so on.

At some point in my teenage years, I realized how much of my life I had been wasting in front of a screen that was harming me physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Since then, only on rare occasions have I watched television, and, for more than the last 10 years of my life, there’s no TV set to be found in my house.

Now you might ask: But is watching TV really that bad?

The truth is that television is a tool that can be used both for good and bad purposes, but as we know it to exist today, for the most part it’s certainly detrimental to our well-being, and here are five compelling reasons why you should stop watching TV:

1. It feeds your mind with lies

One of the best reasons why you should stop watching television is that it is feeding your mind with lies.

Mainstream television is controlled by the corporate elite, which, due to its vested interests, brainwashes people with false information.

Most people think that newscasts present the truth in an objective manner, but in reality they do so in such a way to program people into believing what the elite wants them to believe, thus slowly slowly turning them into passive, thoughtless beings, who, unaware of their ignorance, fervently believe that they possess knowledge about most social issues.

2. It turns you into a mindless consumer

The reason why most TV channels exist is purely for the economic gain of their owners, and what is a better way to earn money than by displaying commercials?

Manipulative advertising is urging people to always desire to buy products, by making them believe that what they need in order to become happy and successful is to consume — and that the more they consume, the better their life will get.

In reality, however, material objects don’t contribute to our happiness and overall well-being once our basic material needs are met, hence buying more stuff in order to fulfill our emotional needs will always leave us empty and disappointed.

3. It makes you feel bad about yourself

In order for commercials to work, they first need to convince people that they are not good enough as they are.

For example, in order to make people buy beauty & fashion products, they first need to make them believe that their aren’t beautiful and significant. If they want to sell a shiny car, they try to make people feel that they are lacking confidence and status.

As you can understand, television is constantly filling your mind with negativity and can ultimately make you an enemy of yourself.

4. It’s harming your health

Another obvious yet by many unrecognized reason to stop watching TV is that it is having a negative impact on your health.

Numerous studies have shown that watching TV for just a couple of hours every day can significantly increase the chances of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

5. It disconnects you from people

People are social beings, with a deep desire to connect and communicate with others.

Being used to spending hours upon hours watching TV, however, the majority of them end up being lonely and alienated, confined within four walls, away from the presence of other people, such as friends and relatives.

As a result, they become depressed, not having anybody to share their being with and travel together in this awesome yet sometimes harsh journey of life.

***

Life can be much more than just passively watching TV, as if you are a zombie, merely surviving but not truly living.

Life can be filled with tremendously beautiful experiences and invaluable lessons, and a good first step to achieve that is to put an end to watching TV once and for all.

Why just Eastenders, why not every soap? It's a bit of light entertainment, you don't have to take it seriously. If I was serious all the time I would go mad. Oh, I am mad anyway. But it's not EastEnders' fault.

Soaps are meant to take you away from your own drudgery and show you someone else's. It's a case of, 'at least my life's not that bad'. In that way they are justifying your personal problems, I suppose, but if you know what they are for they don't really do any harm.

As for the rest of those things on your list, totally agree. Although I do watch the news. I am annoyed at the moment at their treatment of their treatment of JC but once again you have to keep an open mind when watching the news. If you know who runs it, you know how to evaluate it.

I enjoy a bit of itv be. It is a guilty pleasure. I can only watch about 10 minutes of it before I get bored. I have always loved watching people doing and talking about mundane things.

When I used to play with dolls (on my own) in my dolls house, the dolls would just talk about mundane things to eat other. I think that is why I enjoy watching this sort of stuff.

I like watching. Katie Price going to the dentist and stuff like that.

Itv be is relaxing.

Every single programme?!
The comment was about the news particularly. There are a whole host of other informative programmes out there. (I'm thinking nature documentaries which can open up worlds of interest to people who would otherwise never see anything like it).

2. It turns you into a mindless consumer
Depends whether you watch commercial tv or not. Or take notice of the ads or not.

Manipulative advertising is urging people to always desire to buy products, by making them believe that what they need in order to become happy and successful is to consume — and that the more they consume, the better their life will get.
It's not just tv that does that.
Should we all stop using the internet as well - the amount of ads on there is far more than on tv.

3. It makes you feel bad about yourself
Again, it depends what you watch.

The argument here seems to be anti news and anti adverts, which isn't really a valid argument for not watching tv at all.

I agree that we probably spend too much time watching tele and not interacting with people, but exactly the same could be said for the internet. Shall we all log off and go and do something less boring instead?

i use ad blockers & don't get any adverts on the internet.

i suppose yes - the internet has a lot of crap on it as well, but there is far more of a choice as to what information is being accessed. Of course it's better to have a balance & to be interacting/socialising with others & also doing other activities.

I always take everything you say completely seriously. I enjoy your posts. Especially now you are with the Honey Monster in the Sugar Puffs bag.

Exactly, everybody needs a guilty pleasure. Yours is it be, mine is EastEnders. I must admit I wasn't that impressed with their portrayal of post partum psychosis. But I'd rather watch that than Katie Price going to the dentist. Unless you're being sadistic and you enjoy watching her suffer? She's not as thick as she makes out. But thick sells, which leads on nicely to annoying 'reality' shows like TOWIE..

Is that a veiled reference to Why Don't You? Am showing my age now.

Certainly is - well spotted :D
Think we're both showing our age......

Though I used to hate that programme and as soon as they suggested turning off in the opening credits, I would.
Not quite how it was meant to work, I don't think.

I didn't like it either. But I remember the kind of things they did on it. It was kids presenting it. Wasn't the most awful thing on TV though. I got easily bored in the holidays when I was at school. Kids' programmes were better than they are now but they weren't that good either.

The music programmes on BBC 4 are good. So not all TV is bad or uninformative. You can also watch TV with other people. There are some events broadcast on TV that unite people. For example the Olympics Opening Ceremony in London. People would talk about it to other people the next day. Therefore TV can encourage social interaction rather than discourage it. Here we are remembering old kids' programmes and it has sparked a conversation. So it can unite as well as isolate.. That has to be a good thing. :hug5:

I love love love the music programmes on BBC4, especially duets at the BbC, dusty at the BBC, Elton John at the BBC etc.

I watch it on Fridays.

Katie Price going to the dentist is not sadistic. She just gets her teeth whitened. After that she goes to toys r us to spoil her children. I wonder how they will turn out?

I watch tv alone. Shows what a loner I am. Not good. I have to even watch tv alone.

I can't wait for Eurovision. I know lots of people have Eurovision parties. One day I might like to have a Eurovision party.
