Hello all. I desperately need advice and support right now. I'm on a fixed income. I get S.S.I. due to disabilites. Plus my sister only gets a few hours of work a week. She makes little money too. Our rent had an increase of $200.00!!! That's the most the manager has ever increased it. I think it's so much because she took away our $100.00 rent discount? My sister, pets, and I just may be forced to be homeless! Even with housing payment assistance it is just way to much. I'm mentally and physically disabled. Plus my poor cat has expensive medical bills for treating her kidney failure. I had to get into my food and my own medical care money because of the rent hike. Now we can't even save for a car. Is that much of a rent increase even legal??? Please help me! What do I need to do?! We can't be homeless!

$200 does sound like a lot...it could be due to a property tax increase, I suppose...which the landlord passes on to you in your rent. If you know of a good realtor or can find someone who can recommend one, maybe they can help you sort out what should be fair rates for your area. Other than that, I don't have much advice. Good luck to you and your sister!

Thanks HauntedWitch. The manager of the apartment complex I reside in is the owner too. Or at least she says she is. I wonder if what she did was even legal. But other tenants here have said she only increased their rent by only $90.00. But ours by $200.00! With all this dry rot, electrical problems, ancient appliences, and an air conditioner that breaks every 2 years! The maintanence barely fixes anything. I am so terrified and very angry! 😳😠

I would go and talk to her to see if she would give us our $100.00 discount back or just decrease our rent $100.00 but I don't think she would. Plus I'm also terrified that if I did try to negotiate with her that she would look for any reason to evict us! I even reported the rent hike to Social Security and my S.S.I. check is still the same small amount. We have to run the a.c. a lot here so my poor sick cat can live more comfortably until she sadly passes away. So p.g.e. will be so expensive! 😲😰 So scared!

Rather than talking to your landlord, do consider calling a Real Estate office. They handle rental listings and can probably tell you what is and isn't legal or fair in your city. Maybe they can even help you find a better place to live.

I don't know what real estate office to call? Plus I didn't know they helped with apartments and rent issues. I thought they only sold homes. Thanks again. 🤔

I guess I find out the old fashioned way. By phone book and phone call.

Or internet. Look up real estate in your city online. You may even be able to actually browse ads for apartments.
Okay thank you so much. Will do. 🤗👍

Good luck with your searching, IWOMH2! I know in my country, unless there is massive damage caused by the tenant, landlords can only increase their rent 10% per lease.
